FOOTWAYS for other pollutants
The methodology developed and used by FOOTWAYS relies on:
- a detailed characterisation of locations where pesticides are used, in terms of weather, soil hydrology and crop development
- the deployment of the best research models to simulate the fate of pollutants in those locations.
Although we’ve applied this methodology only to pesticides so far, the methodology is universal and can be adapted to deal with other contaminants such as:
- nitrate
- phosphorus
- pathogens ;
- contaminants present in sewage sludge (e.g. human pharmaceuticals)
- veterinary medicines (e.g. antibiotics or hormonally active substances) present in slurry or manure
- some biocides.
The adaptation of the FOOTWAYS methodology to a given other pollutant is obviously more or less straightforward depending on the type of pollutant under study.
